Incompetence and ignorance as a disastrous duo
Many people tend to overestimate themselves.
Because they don't know that they know nothing: According to analyses, incompetent people in particular often overestimate themselves. Two psychologists gave the effect a name that is very popular in derogatory comments.
On social media, someone is constantly being said to be the best proof of the Dunning-Kruger effect. Someone thinks they are clever precisely because they are particularly stupid, is the attack associated with the popular scientific term. The psychologists David Dunning and Justin Kruger presented their theory in a 1999 paper. According to this theory, people who are not very knowledgeable in their respective fields overestimate themselves because they have no idea what they don't know.
It is great to have so much public fame, Dunning said recently in a "Scientific America" podcast. But he would like the term not to be used as a swear word, "because it's really about thinking about yourself and knowing that there might be things you don't know. It's not about judging other people."
Although this effect, which sounds so obvious, is sometimes laughed at or even controversial among experts, it has a huge fan base in the public. Everyone probably has the impression from time to time that the person they are talking to has very little idea about a topic, but considers themselves to be the greatest expert.
Dunning emphasizes that it is not about stupidity in general. The effect affects everyone sooner or later in a specific area - after all, an art connoisseur does not necessarily know much about medicine. The extent to which the phenomenon can take hold has been shown not least by the corona pandemic, in which non-experts such as law professors presented supposedly groundbreaking but in fact completely absurd results.
According to Dunning and Kruger, the paradoxical tendency to overestimate oneself can lead people who know little to confidently make nonsensical decisions. That can be dangerous. For the person themselves, if they make a medical diagnosis after Google research or consider themselves the new stock market expert after watching three instructional videos. For others, if the 18-year-old novice driver thinks they drive better than everyone else. And for companies, if employees do not understand the consequences of their actions.
No idea of one's own incompetence
According to the two US psychologists, the phenomenon is based on the fact that people are generally bad at realistically assessing their knowledge, skills or performance: According to studies, more than 90 percent of US drivers are convinced that they are above-average drivers. (80 percent of those who are below average, i.e. in reality bad drivers (= 40 percent of all drivers) overestimate themselves and fantasize about themselves as above-average drivers and would probably indignantly reject any further training regarding their poor driving skills...) "And when asked about their own contribution to housework, the total value of families is usually well over 100 percent," explains social psychologist Erb. Mathematically, the value cannot be over 100 - so individual family members overestimate their contribution. It
is also clear in sports, financial matters or views on the climate crisis: people quickly believe that they are very knowledgeable and can have a say, if not even know the perfect solution. One of the best-known examples: There are an incredible number of self-proclaimed football experts in Germany.
In the worst quarter of all, many believed they were doing much better - even when they saw the forms of the best participants. They were simply unable to notice their own incompetence and were also unable to recognize - and recognize - the competence of people with more specialist knowledge. Test subjects who did particularly well, on the other hand, tended to underestimate their performance.
Accordingly, knowing a little about something leads to clear Dunning-Kruger effects. Various tests have shown that beginners initially approach something with respect. But as soon as they have acquired their first small skills, they tend to seriously overestimate themselves. A little experience - and the ego gallops away from performance.
But why does such a cognitive distortion even exist when it can have so many negative consequences? On the one hand, overestimating yourself strengthens self-esteem and confidence in your own abilities. This can also have a positive effect on health. "And those who have more confidence in themselves usually achieve more." People who are convinced of themselves as ignorant often get further in their careers than smarter,
under-the-radar people. This is also due to the influence they have on others: people who overestimate themselves are often perceived as particularly competent and decisive. Experts are much more aware of the complexity of a subject - but their self-confidence is all the lower given the abundance of reservations and details that need to be taken into account. So the simpleton who spreads nonsense with conviction triumphs over the smarter, more insecure person.
The public hardly wants to hear assessments like "It's not clear, there are arguments for and against." Apparently simple solutions are far more popular, especially since the dissemination of information has generally become more superficial for decades.
Education? I don't need it
The Dunning-Kruger effect may support some careers - but for those affected, it also represents a trap: people who think they are all-knowing are less likely to take advantage of opportunities to further their education. And they are more likely to unfairly devalue others. "It is therefore very important to keep reminding yourself that you can easily overestimate yourself in many areas."
People in other cultures that are less focused on individualism often manage this better. Analyses in Japan, for example, have shown that people there are more likely to underestimate their abilities and are therefore more motivated to constantly improve.
